I was on a short business trip and bought a coworker some ice
cream and he was very surprised and thanked me. I told him I just
wanted to be kind. ...He didn't know what to say, but after that he
began to open up a little more and we had some good honest
conversations.

I was traveling and was waiting in line at a shop in the airport.
A young serviceman was in front of me. As we waited, I shook his hand
and thanked him for his service to our country. He shook my hand and
then gave me a hug and said he prefers hugs to handshakes. He was
grateful for the support and said that when he left the base that
morning there were protestors outside the base. He went to the checkout
and his debit card didn't work. He told the clerk he would have to make
a call to his bank to see what the problem was. He was very apologetic
to everyone else in line. The clerk voided his purchase and proceeded to
ring up my purchase. I told the clerk I would like to pay for his
purchase. I added enough to the $4 ($2 + $2) to pay his bill. He
seemed shocked, but very appreciative. I told him to consider it as
God's way of giving him a hug. As for myself, I spent a few dollars
but felt like a million bucks! My hope is that it may have made him
more aware of God and restored some faith in his fellow Americans.
Perhaps this one incident will make no difference in the young man's
life, but it is humbling to think that God has the power to take this
one encounter, and turn it into something much bigger. I am praying for
the young man.

Name: Nohemi Comments With the $2.00. I brought a jard of home made salsa to my work place, and we had names drawn for $2.00 per person, the name that was drawn got the jard of salsa + 2.00. I think the total was about $16.00. We are not that many people. I gave the money to a senior coworker and widow that is going through hard times. I know that she really appreciated.

CommentsMy 2+2 dollars
I thought I had an easy answer to how to show someone kindness but sometimes kindness is something people don't know what to do with. Our culture says that we have to provide for ourselves. What a shame it is when generosity is offered and then refused. It reminds me of Christ's generosity to offer his life and then so many people reject his sacrifice and push away a free gift.
I first tried to offer to buy a coworker lunch and although she refused I was able to give my time and gas to run a few miles down the road and pick up lunch for her some girls in the office. At first I was frustrated that my attempt to be generous was rejected and then I realized that seeds could still be planted especially when someone noticed that I used my lunch break to run for other people's food and I had simply brought leftovers for my own lunch. I sheepishly smiled as though she caught me red handed. Maybe generosity can be spread even without spending two dollars.
Then yesterday I was stopping for lunch at Canoe on the Run. As I signed my receipt, I thought why should I tip them if they are not a waitress, etc. but realized it was another opportunity to show generosity. So there I spent my 2+2 dollars. and I don't know if they even noticed.... but in a way maybe obedience just means doing what you hear God telling you no matter who sees. It was a lesson for me in hearing God's voice. Oh how often I forget to listen to hear Him speak.
Learning to be generous with what God has generously given to me.
